Thyroid Cancer Surgery

Thyroid cancer is an endocrine cancer type with an excellent cure rate.

Surgery is the most common treatment for thyroid cancer. Depending on the size and location of the tumor, the following types of surgical interventions may be considered:

1. Lobectomy
A lobectomy is a surgical operation in which the lobe containing the tumor is removed. It is performed in cases of differentiated thyroid cancers (papillary or follicular) that are small and do not show signs of spreading beyond the thyroid gland.

2. Thyroidectomy
Thyroidectomy is a surgical intervention in which the entire thyroid gland is removed. It is the most common surgical procedure for thyroid cancer and is performed through a few centimeters long incision in the front of the neck.

Thyroidectomy can be partial or total. In the case of partial thyroidectomy, only the affected part of the thyroid is removed. However, most people with thyroid cancer require a total thyroidectomy, which involves removing the entire thyroid gland (both lobes and the isthmus).

3. Removal of Lymph Nodes
If cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, they are also removed during the intervention, along with the thyroid gland.
